Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is used for treatment of tooth decay, cavities, and hypersensitivity.
What is SDF?
Silver Diamine Fluoride is an antimicrobial liquid that can be applied to active decay to prevent the progression and arrest the decay. While the ideal treatment is to remove the decay and place a restoration SDF is an alternative noninvasive method to stop decay, especially in young children with primary teeth.
What Are The Benefits?
Silver Diamine Fluoride is particularly effective for young children or children with disabilities with extensive decay that can not be treated in one appointment.

Some Risks Associated with SDF:
- It will stain the decay black
- Patient may have a metallic taste which will resolve quickly
- Every effort will be made to ensure successful treatment is provided. There is a risk it will not stop the decay and there is no guarantee. If the decay is no arrested the decay will progress and require further treatment that could include another application of SDF, a filling, root canal therapy or possibly extraction.
